Audience Research

Secondary Research Into Potential Target Audience

Vibe's magazine is for both men and women having 50.5% as men and 49.5% women, this shows that a lot of there audience is mixed, therefore they have to make sure that their magazine is suitable for both audiences. The picture in this screen shot is Janet Jackson, but she has hid her hair away and is wearing a suit this might be to show men as an audience but also she has makeup on and obviously is a girl therefore also represents women. This is very good for the magazine as she is advertising for both men and women so both genders will want to read and buy the magazine.

The magazine has a medium age of 28, this is quite a high age for a r&b magazine, this shows that the magazine is quite sophisticated and uses adult terminology. 38.6% of its audience are between the ages 18 and 24, this shows it also caters for young people. Therefore there are not normally really young people (ages 15-18) buying this magazine as it is to old for them and has things that they are not interested in, inside the magazine.

Also the magazine sells most of its magazine's to african/americans being at 71.3%! this is a large number for just one type of race, i think this is because most of the aritsts that are in this genre are this type of race therefore they can realte to them. The other races are inbetween 14-18% which is a large amount.

Giants magazine is for both men and women also, its 50/50 which means it must cater for both women and mens needs. This is really good as they have maganged to make a balance between the sexes, and draw in both of them. It's medium age is 29 which is very old considering the genre, as it is r&b and dance you would normally expect late teens early twenty's, so 29 is quite old. Therefore this magazine must be very mature and draw in older readers. For 18 - 34 year olds it is 75% out of 100% who buy the magazine, therefore the other 25% must be either young than 18 or older than 34, which means that this magazine has a huge audience and caters for alot of the population. 21 year olds and over is 89%, therefore to conclude this 11% under 21 must buy this magazine.

There is an average of 71% single people who buy this magazine and also 73% who attend college, this magazine has a mass audience.

Also there is 60% people who are black buying this magazine, 10% white, 20% Hispanic and 2% Asian, therefore it has four ethnicity groups and the biggest is black. This shows that the magazine may have more black artist's in their magazine, because therefore other black people can relate to them. Also becuase of the genre you normally get more black artist's doing r&b and hip-hop, so that could also be a factor.

I think that people who would buy Vibe and Giant would be Trendies, this is because artits that are featured in these magazines care about their look, and how thay come across, making sure that they are portraining the right style and genre to their audience. T.I, for example is a man in his twenty's who on the cover of Vibe wore a suit but un-buttoned, this was to show sophisticated but with a trendy/cool edge. As being trendy is nowadays easier to come by the tribe is getting bigger, this is because street shops like primark, new look, river island, are all getting more fashionable, and getting all the styles from the catwalk. Therefore giving people with a smaller budget a chance, hence why the tribe is getting bigger.

I also think that people who read these magazine could also be Townies. This is because these kinds of people like r&b and hoip hop, which is what these magazine are about 70% of the time but also 30% dance. As for the style i think it may intercross and be for both of the tribes.

Here is a video of what the perception of a Trendie is...

Overall after analysing these magazine's audience, my audience is going to be about the same, as i am doing a dance magazine also. I think some aspects will be different; me age range will be more niche than mass, as i want mine to be 17-25 i think this is quite a wide age range as most of the pictures in my magazine will be of people aged, 17 -20. My gender is going to be for both sexes, as i think it is unfair to only target one. Also i think the lifestyle/class/behaviour will be a mixture between a townie and a trendie, this is because both of these trends seem like me and appeal to me.
